On Sunday, March 11 from 2-4 pm, there will be a memorial event held
at the UBC Asian Centre to honour those who perished in the 2011 Great
East Japan Earthquake, those who survived and those who continue to be
helpful in the struggle for recovery.
The central activity of the event will be the ringing the Pacific
Bell, beginning precisely at 2:47 pm, the time in Japan that disaster
first struck. Participants will be invited to ring the bell until all
who wish to do so have had their opportunity.
A special 1000-crane origami construction (senbazuru) is currently in
preparation. Tea, soup and candles will be available in the Asian
Centre amid displays from our event partners.
The event is being coordinated by students from the UBC-Ritsumeikan
Academic Exchange, with the support of the UBC Department of Asian
Studies,Institute of Asian Research, Canada Japan Society of BC,
Vancouver Mokuyokai Society, UBC ASIA club and the UBC Japan
Association.
