Next Tuesday (the 12th) brings the October DinnerKai. This month, we're going to the newly opened Suika Japanese Restaurant on W Broadway. Suika is so new that they do not yet have a website but judging from the limited reviews and word-of-mouth (at least 2 Mokuyokai members recommended it), it is well worth the try.
Be amongst the first to try Suika! Of course, besides the delicious food and unique dining experience, it is an opportunity to meet and get to know other Mokuyokai participants. The atmosphere is relaxed and fun! The number of spots is limited so please RSVP early.

Suika is the casual version of Kingyo, and shares the same owners. It has a modern, lively atmosphere and extensive menu.

Dinnerkai at Green Leaf Sushi on Thursday, June 7th (6:30-8:30pm)
Green Leaf Sushi only holds about 16 people and has only one cook – the owner. He has over 25 year of experience and seems to really care about food and his customers. The food is excellent and always presented in an artistic way. The place has a very cozy ambiance, decorated with antiques and the cook's abstract art.
So why don't you try a Dinnerkai if you haven't before? Of course, besides the food and dining experience, it is an opportunity to meet and get to know other Mokuyokai participants. The atmosphere is relaxed and fun! The number of spots is limited to 10 so please RSVP early. Participants will have to order in advance given the small size of the restaurant; a menu will be emailed to
participants.

Okonomiyaki cooking and eating night: Sat, April 28th
*Update April 12th: only a few spots remain!*
For the past two years, Mokuyokai has hosted an okonomiyaki cooking and eating night led by Mokuyokai Board member and chef extraordinaire, Shaun Krislock. Due to huge demand, we will have another session on Saturday, April 28th. Join us and learn how to make this delicious dish. Of course, we'll eat what we make. Besides enjoying the delicious food, you'll meet other Mokuyokai members and participants.
Not sure what Okonomiyaki is? Okonomiyaki is a popular Japanese pan fried food that consists of batter and cabbage. Selected toppings and ingredients are added which can vary greatly (anything from meat and seafood to wasabi and cheese). This variability is reflected in the dish's name; "okonomi" literally means "to one's liking". The dish is available all over Japan, but is most popular in Western, particularly in Hiroshima and Osaka. (From Japan-guide.com)
At the event, Shaun Krislock will demonstrate how to make okonomiyaki. Participants will then branch off in groups to make their own to share and enjoy. This event filled up quickly last year, so please RSVP early! Please note that as we have to pick up the ingredients in advance, we ask that participants note the cancellation policy.
More info on okonomiyaki:

Date and time: Saturday, April 28th, 2012. 5pm-9:00pm
Location: 3440 West Broadway (http://g.co/maps/597ha)
Cost: Mokuyokai members $15 / Non-Members $20. Please pay by cash at the event.
Please bring your own pair of (non-disposable) chopsticks.
Number of spots: 20
RSVP: with your name(s) and contact number by April 25th to dinnerkai@mokuyokai.bc.ca. (This event is expected to fill up quickly, so please rsvp soon!)
Cancellation policy: Participants who cancel 48 hours before the event will be asked to honour the payment. We have to buy the ingredients in advance and cancelling at that point makes it difficult to find another participant to fill the spot. Thank-you for your understanding.

Dinner and a movie: Saturday, March 10th (Dinner from 5:30pm; Movie from 7pm)
Join us for dinner and a movie! We're going to eat at The Eatery, a very unique restaurant on Broadway (http://www.theeatery.ca/) and then watch one of two Japanese movies. One is the Japanese version of Shall We Dance (Like the one that Richard Gere and Jennifer Lopez starred in, but much better) It is a light hearted comedy. The other is Departures and it won Best Foreign Film at the 2009 Academy Awards. It is a little more serious in tone, but very uplifting. We'll take a vote that evening which one to watch and watch the other one next time.
Shall We Dance: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zQWEhPYwuY4
Departures: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MtdENmR6jKw
