Special Event: Mokuyokai's 27th Annual Ohanami (Cherry Blossom Viewing Festival) on Saturday April 9, 2011 at UBC Nitobe Garden and Asian Centre

Escape the stresses of everyday life at the Vancouver Mokuyokai Society's Ohanami (Cherry Blossom Viewing), the 27th annual celebration of cherry blossoms!

Mokuyokai's 27th Annual  Ohanami (Cherry Blossom Viewing) Festival
Time: 12:00 noon - 7:00 pm
Date: Saturday, April 9, 2011

This year, the ohanami takes on a special meaning. It is not only a time to enjoy the splendor of the cherry blossoms and experience Japanese culture, but is also a time to reflect and think about those affected by the earthquake and tsunami. In addition to our regularly scheduled events, please join us at 6pm by the Pacific Bell outside UBC Asian Centre to give prayers honouring those affected.

Special regular events begin at 12 pm and continue until 7 pm. Highlights include formal tea ceremonies on tatami mats in Nitobe Garden's traditional tea house, origami (paper folding) lessons, kamishibai (Japanese-style storytelling), cherry blossoms haiku and photo contest, opportunity to try on a yukata, guided tours of Nitobe Memorial Garden, Sakura bento boxes, limited-edition sakura and matcha soft chocolates, organic shiitake and oyster mushrooms, Japanese food and drinks, and shakuhachi and koto (Japanese harp) musical performances by Shakuhachi Society of BC and Ms. Kozue Matsumoto. Top off your day with a tour of the garden by lantern-light, a once-yearly event at Nitobe that should not be missed.

At 6pm, Keith Snyder of Tozenji-Seizan Temple will lead prayers in memory of those affected by Japan tsunami/earthquake. This will be at 6pm outside the UBC Asian Centre by the Pacific Bell. Public in attendance may ring the bell and send their prayers to Japan. Donations will be accepted throughout the day, all of which will be forwarded to the Canadian Red Cross Society.

Special Event: Okonomiyaki on July 6

We will have another okonomiyaki cooking and eating night led by Mokuyokai Board member and chef extraordinaire, Shaun Krislock on Satuday, July 6th. Join us and learn how to make this delicious dish, or show off the okonomiyaki skills you already have! Of course, we'll eat what we make. Besides enjoying the delicious food, you'll meet other Mokuyokai members and participants.  If we're lucky, we might also have some desert!

Not sure what Okonomiyaki is? Okonomiyaki is a popular Japanese pan fried food that consists of batter and cabbage. Selected toppings and ingredients are added which can vary greatly (anything from meat and seafood to wasabi and cheese). This variability is reflected in the dish's name; "okonomi" literally means "to one's liking". The dish is available all over Japan, but is most popular in Western, particularly in Hiroshima and Osaka. (From Japan-guide.com)

At the event, Shaun Krislock will demonstrate how to make okonomiyaki. Participants will then branch off in groups to make their own to share and enjoy. This event filled up quickly last year, so please RSVP early! Please note that as we have to pick up the ingredients in advance, we ask that participants note the cancellation policy.

Special Event: 2013 Mokuyokai Hanami - Queen Elizabeth Park (2:00 PM on Saturday, April 13)

skrislock[at]gmail[dot]com.

After the great fun we had last year under the blossoms, we thought we'd do it again this year!  Although lots of trees are blooming around the city, the trees up at Queen Elizabeth park are lagging behind a bit, so it looks they'll be beautiful on the 13th.

We'll be having a somewhat Japanese-style hanami event in Queen Elizabeth Park.  Let's gather at Queen Elizabeth at 2:00 PM on Saturday, April 13. This will be a very easy going event; please bring your own lunch / bento / snacks and (non-alcoholic) drinks.

Since this is a public park in Canada, unfortunately we can't drink alcohol.  But we'll have a great time nonetheless.  We might not have sake, but we will have at least TWO blue tarps!  If you have a tarp or large picnic blanket, please bring it along.  Other ideas for things to bring: acoustic musical instruments, frisbees, hackey sack, badminton, haiku writing gear ... ?

I will once again be the human-karaoke-machine, so get ready to sing!

Everyone is welcome to this no-charge event.  See you on the 13th!

Last year's Okonomiyaki night was a huge success; join us and learn how to make this delicious dish. Of course, we'll eat what we make. Besides enjoying the delicious food, you'll meet other Mokuyokai members and participants.

Mokuyokai Board member and chef extraordinaire, Shaun Krislock, will demonstrate how to make okonomiyaki. Participants will then branch off in groups to make their own to share and enjoy. This event filled up quickly last year, so please RSVP early! Please note that as we have to pick up the ingredients in advance, we ask that participants pay in advance.
